If you are out of a job, you will need to take a closer look at every dollar that goes out and spend your money wisely.

27 Ways to Cut Back
- Lower Your Bills. When working, we tend to do things because we can. Some things we really just don’t need, but like and buy just because we can. If you are “laid off”, “not laid off” or “anticipating a lay-off” the following tips on saving money will work in your behalf. It’s always good to take a look at how you can save money. Saved money come in handy when you need the extra money.
- Get Rid of the House Phone. Most folks have a cell phone. Contact your service provider and review your current plan. Move to a lesser plan that is more in line with your new usage level. You may not need all those minutes you currently have.
- Cut Down Your Cable. Do you watch all those stations you get? Get a less expensive package that includes only what you really watch or change to a cheaper provider offering a bundled plan with incentives. Need a movie, borrow one from the library.
- No Cash-No Carry. Don’t buy stuff you don’t need or can’t afford. Always pay for your purchases with cash. If you do not have enough cash to make a purchase, don’t buy it. Only use your credit cards when it is absolutely necessary for special circumstances. If the sticker states “Sale” act as though it isn’t.
- Use Coupons. You can find coupons in many places-in your junk mail, online, on the back of your register slips, on food items, magazines and newspapers. Keep your coupons organized and accessible.
- Use the One Person One Light Rule. Electric is expensive. Only use a light where you are. If you are not there…turn it off. There is no reason for paying good money for electric you are not using.
- Use It All. Open the top, shake it out and use it all. Leave nothing in the shampoo bottle or the jelly jar. Swoosh out all the lotion. Use it down to the last drop. You can usually get 2 more applications if you squeeze it all out.
- Get the Best Deal on Medications. Ask your doctor to prescribe generic alternatives. There is a significance difference in the cost of medication between stores. It can be a huge difference. - Consolidate Travel. Save your gas by restricting your driving. Be conscious of the number of places you go in a day and the routes you take. Car pool when you can. When you save miles, you save money.
- Take a List When You Shop. Don’t go shopping until you firm up your list. Stay on the list. Carry it with you and check off items. Don’t pick up anything that is not on the list.
- Make the Most of the Clothes. You Have. Go through your closet and make new “mix and match” combinations with your clothes and accessories. Chances are you will not be wearing those clothes you considered your “Work Wardrobe”. Don’t buy any new clothes until you have a new focus.
- Eat In. Limit Your Restaurant Hopping. Sure there is no prep or dishes to wash but, eating out over a period of time can become costly. If you do go out to eat often, take advantage of early bird specials and other menu specials. You may also have enough left over’s for tomorrow’s lunch or dinner.
- Run the Dishwasher Only When Full. Running the dishwasher with just a few items in it can be costly. Wait until it is full. Run your dishwasher at night. Also, running the dishwasher late at night saves money, as energy rates are lower at night in most cities.
- Make Coffee at Home. You can make a great cup of coffee right in your own coffee pot for pennies a cup. The time it takes to make your own cup of coffee will be well worth the savings.
- Stop Gambling. Casinos are fun, but they are set up for you to loose your money. Putting your money in is giving it away and quick. You can win at times but the losses will normally outweigh the wins. Stay away! This includes the daily lotteries.
- Change the Thermostat. Turn your heater a few degrees down in the winter and leave the air conditioner off or a few degree higher in summer. If it’s a tad colder, layer your indoor clothing.
- Drink More Water. Stop buying sugary soft drinks. They are not good for you and can cause you to gain unnecessary weight. Sodas are also expensive. Water is a better solution for quenching your thirst.
- Select Free Banking Accounts. Check around and find a bank that has no fees or fees lesser than the bank fees you are now paying. A $10 fee each month equates to $120 a year in the pocket of banks.
- Cut back on your cell phone plan. Do you really need the extras? Check and see if you are paying for international services and you don’t know anyone out of the country.
- Reduce dinners out. Unless it’s special occasion, eliminate eating out. Have your date night at home.
- Downsize our grocery budget. Make a grocery list. Cut back on the things you don’t need. Always remember to use coupons.
- No extra debt payments. Pay on time, the minimum amount. In the the end it’s more, but when your laid off it not the time to dish out the extra money.
- Brush Your Teeth With Baking Soda. It may not taste as good, but it is much better for your gums. Mix a little toothpaste in and the taste will improve.
- Cut Your Own Hair. A little practice is all you need. Ask your partner to help you. If you don’t feel comfortable doing so, go the cheaper route. Cosmetology schools have lower rates, use coupons or ask a friend.
- Unplug Unused Electronics. Electronics run up the electric bill. If you unplug electronics when not in use, you will see a savings on your electric bill. This includes the TV, DVD Players, Cable Boxes, Wireless Routers, Desktop computers, Coffee Makers and other small appliances.
- Quit Smoking. Cigarettes are very expensive and if you add up a weeks worth of cigarette buying, the savings will amaze you. Plus they are bad for your health and the health of those around you.
- Wash Your Clothes by Hand. Consider tossing a load of delicates in the bathtub and wash away.
